Pictures of the Commuter Lounge

commuter_lounge_2.jpg

From the outside of the commuter lounge we can see that it seems very welcoming. Looking through the window we can see a girl relaxing on the couch. The girl seems to be comfortable in this lounge. The commuters seem to think of this room as home. I think that this place is a nice place to have for the students who do not dorm. Without it, they would be forced to sit in the library and other places around campus. This area somewhere they can come to when an average student who dorms may go back to their dorm room.

This picture shows different items that are available for commuters. A kitchen counter is somewhere they can prepare food that they may have brought with them. This may emphasize the idea that many commuters do not have meal plans. This lounge is a place where they can make a small lunch or have a snack. We can see a coffee pot that is provided and also shelves to hold different food items.

This picture shows us some of the students who are spending time in the commuter lounge. We can see a larger group of people who seem to know each other. The one boy looks like he is talking to the other boy. This group looks like they are spending their time here relaxing on the couched and talking to friends. We can also see a girl sitting at a table alone. She is working on her laptop and may be getting some of her school work done. We can also see a soda machine which is provided for these commuter lounge. Overall it seems like a nice place to go to if you are a student who commutes.

What do the data you collect suggest to you about the literacy practices of this particular group?

The data shows that some students who commute would rather spend their time talking to friends in the lounge rather than going to the library. If these students were to go to the library they would be forced to use quiet voices. They would not be able to talk amongst friends. We can see that many college students including the commuters spend time reading and doing work. We can also look at the time diaries of these students to see how much time they spend studying and doing homework. Many of them spend a fairly large amount of time doing so. We can see that data collected shows us that theses students care about their work and put much time into it.
